Road congestion worsens
Three years after ministers promised to improve journey times on 100 key routes, the Government has failed to meet its key target for reducing congestion.
The target to “make journeys more reliable on the strategic road network” would have been achieved had the average vehicle delay on the slowest 10 per cent of journeys been less in the 12 months to April 2008 than in the 12 months ending in July 2005.
A spokesperson for the Environmental Transport Association said: “The news coincides with figures showing that the number of cars owned by British households has increased by more than a fifth to 27.8 million in the past decade. The only sensible and equitable way to deal with the problem of congestion, which will only worsen further, is to introduce road pricing.”
