High costs see car clubs thrive
Car clubs, which allow people to hire vehicles by the hour, are enjoying increased popularity due to increases in the price of road tax and fuel.
For many people the cost of car ownership has become prohibitive, and many who are joining car clubs are doing so after deciding to ditch the second family car, or as an alternative to buying one.
One club, Streetcar, has signed up 7,000 new people in just over two months.
A spokesperson for the Environmental Transport Association said: “Car clubs work particularly well in urban areas, but many people are car sharing with friends and neighbours on a much more informal basis. Being flexible about the way we travel is a big step towards being green and saving money.”
