UK renewable energy provision "disgraceful"

Britain’s renewable energy performance is a “national disgrace”, according to environmental charity Friends of the Earth.

Nick Rau, the organisation’s energy campaigner, said that the country has large untapped resources of wind, wave, and tidal power but one of the worst renewable energy records in Europe.

“If the government is serious about tackling climate change it must provide incentives and greater support for energy companies to invest in projects such as offshore wind farms, where the UK could become a world leader,” he continued.

Mr Rau went on to say that householders, businesses and local authorities should be encouraged to install small scale renewable energy systems like solar panels and they should receive guaranteed premium payments for the renewable energy they sell back to the National Grid.

Shell was one of three shareholders in the London Array offshore wind farm project, which aims to generate enough energy to power a quarter of London’s homes, but recently pulled out, claiming that the US government was offering better incentives for investment in the American market.
