Fuel cell vehicles needed to reduce environmental damage, says expert

Hydrogen-powered motor vehicles are essential in meeting environmental goals, according to a fuel cell technology expert.

Dr Sandy Thomas, president of H2Gen Innovations has reported on the results of his research into hydrogen, plug-in hybrids and biofuels at the National Hydrogen Association’s annual meeting in Sacramento, California, reports the H2Gen website.

In an article in Fuel Cell Today, Dr Thomas claims the only energy source able to reduce the transport-related damage done to the environment is fuel cell technology.

Dr Thomas states: “The hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicle is the only option that can achieve the goal of reducing greenhouse gases by 60 per cent or more below 1990 levels in the transportation sector.”

“The second-best option, cellulosic ethanol plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs), could at best achieve a 20 per cent reduction, and even then not until 2090.”

In the article, Dr Thomas concludes that using fuel cell vehicles will reduce dependence on oil, adding that they “will provide greater societal cost savings than any other alternative.”
