Aviation industry is 'committed' to reducing emissions

The aviation industry is “committed” to improving the environmental impact of the sector and will achieve emissions targets, says an expert.

“Real improvements” will be seen in the environmental performance of the industry, according to the Airport Operators Association (AOA).

Neil Pakey, chairman of the AOA, said: “Environmental campaigners are wrong to suggest that an expansion in air travel will not square with the UK’s emissions-reduction targets.”

He added that that association believes taxation in the industry should be “emissions-based” to ensure growth is “sustainable”.

“The aviation industry, through the Sustainable Aviation Programme and the EU emissions trading scheme, is committed to a range of measures which will deliver real improvements in environmental performance,” said Mr Pakey.

In related news, the British Airports Authority (BAA) has announced it will spend £6 billion on improving its airports over the next five years.

BAA has recently applied to open a new full-length runway at Stansted, making it the second at the airport.
