BAA second runway application 'ignores environmental issues'

British Airports Authority’s (BAA’s) application for a second runway at Stansted shows that they are ignoring the environmental issues of expanding, according to an activist group.

The Plane Stupid group says that the application shows that BAA is not prepared to tackle climate change issues in the industry.

Patrick Gillett, a spokesperson for Plane Stupid, said: “It is growth at a cost to all of us and a benefit to BAA’s bank balance.

“It absolutely flies in the face of any green or environmental concerns that they would claim to have.”

He went on to say that reducing the aviations industry’s greenhouse gas emissions is the best way to reduce the world’s greenhouse gas emissions.

“Growth in that industry is the best way to increase them,” he added.

A press release from Plane Stupid said that “no-one in their right minds” would see Stansted’s expansion as compatible with climate change.

The BAA has pledged over £6 billion to be spent on transforming all of its airports over the next five years.
