'Motorists continues to use mobiles'

Despite increasingly rigid legislation and police enforcement, motorists are continuing to flaunt the no mobile phone rules, it has emerged.
Research by Confused.com has shown that the number of conviction is still increasing at a rate of 18 per cent month-on-month- suggesting apathy towards the law from drivers.
A survey conducted by the website also revealed that one in two respondents had seen a motorist texting while driving, while a further 30 per cent had done so themselves.
Debra Williams, managing director of Confused.com, said: “The findings of this research are alarming as, despite harsher penalties and stronger police enforcement, some motorists are clearly continuing to use mobile phones while driving.
“Although many drivers feel that they can safely respond to a text message, while staying in control of their vehicle, it is important to remember that no driver is infallible – taking your eyes off the road, even for a second, is ill-advised!”
It is hoped that adding points to motorists’ licences, coupled with fines will help deter drivers in the future.
Meanwhile, drivers using their phones in the Thames Valley area could be given a road side safety lesson, under a new scheme.
