Cycle to work scheme - cycle insurance

Why should I insure my cycle to work scheme bike?

The government requires that all bicycles on the scheme must be insured against theft or damage. This is because if a bike is not insured and gets stolen or damaged during the hire period, the employee will have to pay back the value of the bike to their employer and will not receive the tax benefits of the scheme.

Whose responsibility is it to insure the bike?

Under the cycle to work scheme it is the employee’s responsibility to insure the bicycle.

What kind of insurance do I need?

At a minimum, the bike needs to be insured against theft but for those who use their bicycle to commute a comprehensive level of cover is recommended.

How much does it cost to insure my cycle-to-work scheme bike?

The cost of your cover is dependant on the value of your bike and where you live – assuming that your bicycle is usually kept at home.
