Green Transport Week 2011 | Company Cars

Some employees need a car for their work – but for many others the car is a perk. Unfortunately, it’s a perk which encourages car travel. Companies should be encouraging employees to travel by train or bus instead – or better still by bike. That means:
- Offering a cash bonus as an alternative to a company car.
- Not providing free petrol and free city centre employee parking.
- Providing facilities like bike parks and showers for people who cycle to work instead.
- Investing in pool bikes for travel during the course of work.
Take Action!
- Responsible businesses should be thinking carefully about how they impact on the environment. Are there ways you can raise the issues at work (through your union, in a staff council, in a chat to your boss)?
- Check whether your employer offers a cash alternative to a company car.
- Suggest your company buys some pool bikes for work journeys, provides employee buses, or promotes car sharing.
