To buy or not to buy biofuel

I was on Radio 4’s Your and Yours today with Julian Worricker discussing the merits or otherwise of biofuels.

Tyred of Flying

It is often little appreciated how much energy is dissipated through the tyres whilst driving.

Tyres have to help provide a smooth journey and grip the road. The downside is that they produce rolling resistance.

Michelin estimates that about a fifth of the energy used to drive a car is lost through the tyres alone.

Cambridge Leads the Way

I was up in parliament today discussing the success of cycling in Cambridge with MPs – both commoners and lords.

Compared to the rest of Britain Cambridge is an undoubted success story. It is easy to say that Cambridge is bound to be a place to cycle because it is flat but so is Norwich and Cambridge has for more cyclists then Norwich does.

Combining Ordnance Survey Maps and Governemnt Data

Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the world wide web, has recently been working with our national government to help make more government information available to the public and more importantly to make it easy to access.

Government has generally made a mess of data handling schemes.

Being a good Neighbour

As I walked passed my car this morning on my way to work, I noticed a flyer stuffed underneath my car’s windscreen. It said “We offer cash for old cars for banger racing”. Now, it is not uncommon for all the cars in the street to have flyers on their windscreens but in this case my car was definitely singled out – no other car had a flyer on it.

Watch that hole

Now that, for most of us, the snow has gone, we find that the road surface leaves a lot to be desired. If your street, like mine, is full of potholes again then I firmly recommend using one of the pothole filling sites: fixmystreet (www.fixmystreet.com), fillthathole (www.fillthathole.org.uk/) or potholes (www.potholes.co.uk).
