First hybrid double-decker bus in London
London has taken delivery of its first hybrid double-decker bus – one of seventeen such vehicles that will be tested on the capital’s streets.
The bus uses “HybriDrive” diesel electric technology that is already in use on more than 1,500 buses in America.
In this type of hybrid, a diesel engine runs constantly to power a generator which in turn powers an electric motor.
It still produces emissions, but they are far reduced and the vehicle is generally more efficient.
A spokesperson for the Environmental Transport Association (ETA) said: “Public transport is perfectly suited to trail blazing green technology in this way.”

What makes a bus green?
Conventional diesel-powered buses are responsible for high levels of particulate – or soot – emissions, that are damaging to our health.
To date, buses fitted with the “HybriDrive system” are estimated to have dramatically reduced particulate emissions as well as saving five million gallons of diesel fuel and 50,000 tons of carbon emissions.

What is the ETA?
The ETA is a not-for-profit organisation providing motorists and cyclists with green breakdown cover and green insurance products. The ETA exists in order to campaign for sustainable transport – when you buy our services you help fund our charitable work.
