Bicycle lights you wear under your skin

An international team of scientists has developed ultra-thin sheets of inorganic light-emitting diodes (LEDs) for implantation under the skin for biomedical applications, reports PhysOrg.com this week.

The technology could pave the way for bicycle lights worn under the skin.

Light-emitting ‘tattoos’

The LEDs are tiny in size and are designed to monitor wound healing or to control the delivery of drugs triggered by light in photodynamic drug therapy, but on a larger scale, ‘light-emitting tattoos’ could ensure cyclists were always equipped for cycling after dark.

Cycle lights future tech?

A spokesperson for cycle insurers ilovemybike.co.uk said: “Having under-the-skin lights fitted to one’s hand or calves sounds horrific today, but might one day be regarded as no more radical than a tattoo.”

Until the now the most radical lights for cyclists involve jackets with built-in indicator lights, but new technology is fuelling a cycle lights arms race; the most powerful of the latest crop of LED, Xenon strobe and high-intensity discharge (HID) bicycle lights are more powerful than halogen car headlamps. The recently-launched £450 Exposure Six-pack cycle headlight produces around 1800 lumens
