A new type of cycle helmet made from cardboard launched at the London Cycle Show last week is stronger than the commonly-used polystyrene and plastic construction and is designed to withstand multiple shocks. Conventional cycle helmets need to be thrown away if they sustain a blow.
Royal College of Art postgraduate Anirudha Surabhi is developing the lightweight, waterproof Kranium cycle helmet with the help of a £20,000 grant from the James Dyson Fellowship.
Helmets for Boris Bikes?
Currently each Kranuim helmet is bespoke, but the Anirudha says that future versions could be standardised and even sold through vending machines at cycle hire schemes.
Previous designs from RCA students include a cycle storage hoist that puts bikes out of the reach of thieves and a full-size bicycle called the Contortionist that can be wheeled along when folded.
