Transport for London and the Mayor, Boris Johnson, are investing £1.3m in a new ‘Greenways’ scheme in the capital.

Under the scheme, Londoners will see more foot and bicycle paths being funded in an attempt to fulfil the Mayor’s vision of an environmentally friendly city where people can ride their bikes and walk safely and easily.

The Greenways schemes are part of the Mayor’s Great Outdoors Programme, which will receive £220m over three years to enhance London’s streets, roads, squares, and green spaces.

A spokesperson for the Environmental Transport Association (ETA) said: “Cycling in London is being transformed and good-quality paths have an especially important role in encouraging novice cyclists to take to two wheels.”

Other Greenway projects, including the transformation of a disused railway line into a pedestrian and cycle path, are set to be completed this summer in some of the capital’s most attractive, unexplored areas. Ingrebourne Valley, Havering, Hounslow Heath in Hounslow; and Brompton Cemetery in the borough of Kensington and Chelsea, are among these.

According to the mayor, spending money on the schemes will give Londoners better access to some of the most beautiful places in the capital.
