World's greenest bus
A new bus unveiled this week in America claims to have double for fuel efficiency and far lower emissions than current hybrid buses, making it a candidate for the title of ‘world’s greenest bus’.
Michigan-based Fisher Coachworks has launched a 40-foot bus built with a high-strength and lightweight stainless steel body and chassis. Unlike conventional hybrid buses, this new model is powered for most of the time by stored electricity – many existing designs use an electric motor simply to boost the efficiency of a diesel engine.
A spokesperson for the Environmental Transport Association (ETA) said: “As the fuel efficiency of cars increases, the pressure is on public transport to do the same – super-lightweight hybrid buses give it a real head start.”
The 8,000-strong London bus fleet includes a handful of hybrid vehicles, which use an advanced ultra-low emission technology to ensure that carbon dioxide emissions are minimised.
