A free bus service is being launched in Sheffield today.

Dubbed the FreeBee, the service will connect Sheffield Interchange with a number of city centre locations.

David Young – the head of transport integration at South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) – said: “This is great news for Sheffield as it will give a wide range of people the chance to travel easily and for free around the city centre.”

Also commenting on the service, Bryan Lodge, cabinet member for transport and Streetscene at Sheffield city council, said FreeBee will “transform” the city and improve “accessibility and connection for all transport users”.

To mark the new service, local radio station Hallam FM is to offer FreeBee passengers the chance of winning a £1,000 holiday for two to Las Vegas.

FreeBee buses will run every seven minutes between 07:00 GMT and 19:00 GMT and call at Castle Street, Arundel Gate, Norfolk Street, Pinstone Street, Furnival Gate, Charter Row, Moorfoot, Eyre Street, Furnival Street and Paternoster Row.

Today also sees SYPTE increase the capacity of Middlewood park and ride scheme by 150 places in a bid to encourage more people to use the facility.
